The session will also provide a look at their next phase of work, a Climate Risk and Resilience module, which will support strategic planners to build on climate risk assessments and integrate adaptation into land use planning, strategic planning and place-based decision making.

Event Overview:
Climate change is reshaping how we plan communities, infrastructure and places. As expectations around climate resilience continue to grow, planners have an increasingly important role in understanding and managing climate risk from the earliest stages of strategic planning through to development assessment and infrastructure delivery.
The Australian Government has developed the Climate Risk and Opportunity Management Program (CROMP), a suite of guidance, tools and resources to help public sector organisations embed climate risk into decision making.

The session will also provide a look at their next phase of work, including the recently released Local Government Climate Risk Guide and the beginnings of a Climate Risk and Resilience module, which will support strategic planners to build on climate risk assessments and integrate adaptation into land use planning, strategic planning and place-based decision making.

About Sophie
Sophie
Henshaw is an Assistant Director in the Climate Risk and Innovation team
at the Australian Government Department of Climate Change, Energy, the
Environment and Water (DCCEEW). She’s worked on the Climate Risk and
Opportunities Management Program (CROMP) since joining the department over
two years ago and supported the delivery of the Commonwealth’s National
Climate Risk Assessment. Sophie brings experience from international
development and the Victorian Government’s COVID-19 response. She’s
passionate about making climate risk management more accessible across the
public service and strengthening engagement with local government.

About Nilmini
Nilmini
Leybourn is an Assistant Director in the Climate Risk and Innovation team
at the Australian Government Department of Climate Change, Energy, the
Environment and Water (DCCEEW). She is a climate risk and resilience
specialist with over 20 years of experience across Australian Federal,
State and local government, and international environmental organisations.
She specialises in climate adaptation, resilience planning, governance,
and climate risk management. Nilmini is known for helping organisations
translate climate science into practical and implementable strategies. She
has worked extensively with executives, boards, and stakeholders to
support informed decision-making and sustainable outcomes.

About Jo
Jo McClellan MPIA is a social policy and strategic planning expert who joined the Planning
Institute of Australia as Senior Executive, Policy and Advocacy,
bringing more than two decades of experience across government, industry
and consulting. Her expertise sits at the intersection of housing
policy, urban planning, social infrastructure, health and the built
environment, and social impact assessment, with a strong focus on
shaping policy that delivers better outcomes for people, places and
communities.
Jo is recognised for bringing together government, industry and
community stakeholders to navigate complex policy environments, build
consensus and drive practical reform. Her work has focused on helping
shape more sustainable, inclusive and well-designed environments through
evidence-based policy, strategic advocacy and integrated planning
approaches.

Registrations cancelled more than 14 days prior to the event date will not incur any fees and a full refund will be granted. If you cannot attend and you are within 14 days of the event date, you can transfer your ticket to another person. In all other situations we cannot issue a refund or credit.
